On September 14, 2011, the general meeting of the Wisconsin Pastel Association was called to order by Acting President Marcia Hero.  Forty-one were present.  Guests were Barb Mikula, who became a member, and Rita Burnap from Lake Geneva.  Steve Rademan, who has been a member, also attended this, his first, meeting.  We were pleased to see all of them.

As for announcements, one of our members has an exhibit starting the last weekend in September at the Wauwatosa Library.  Darron Lillian will be showing at the Hidden River Show.  Alecia Schmitz has two pictures of art at the Bergstrom, and two at the Trout (?) in Appleton.  Ray Kleinow has a show at the New Berlin Public Library, and several members who also belong to the Milwaukee Sketch Club, will have art at the Sharon Lynn Wilson by the end of the month.  Debbie Callahan, Marcia Hero, and Marcia Hochstetter will be showing at the Art Bar.

The MARN plein air show is in October in Wauwatosa, and registrations are due by September 23.

Alecia gave the Treasurer's Report.  We have a balance of $912.40.

Donna Staats gave a report on the picnic.  We all had plenty of food, after Darron Lillian's pastel demonstration.  It was so hot that we didn't paint, but had a fun social hour.

Our Deja Vu opening at the One-Way Cafe was very successful.  Pick-up is October 22 from 2-3 p.m.

We need a new brochure insert to be decided on at the next Board meeting.

Our show at the Alfons Gallery is scheduled for April 22 through June 17, 2012, and the theme is "Nature Walk."  It will be judged, but not juried.  Marcia Hero will check on the possibility that there is a fee involved, which we were not aware of.

We may have a 2012 fall show at Concordia.

For the November meeting, we plan to have a holiday party at Marcia Hero's house.  The date is November 9, 6-9 p.m., at 2763 N. Carlton Place.  Those who wish may bring a small pastel with suitable covering, for an art exchange.
Each person should also bring a dish (A-M) or dessert (N-Z).

The meeting ended at 7:10 p.m.  Fred Bell gave a portrait pastel demonstration.

The Wisconsin Pastel Artists met at Artist and Display on May 11, 2011.  The meeting began at 6:40 with the Wauwatosa Photographers setting up their  work for about 20 of our members to peruse, and to each choose a print which we will interpret, using  pastels.  What difficult decisions!   By 7:30, prints were chosen, entry forms filled out, and entry fees of $25. were paid for our joint Deja Vu II show at One-Way Cafe.

The photographers left, and Debra Patterson opened the regular meeting.  Darron Lillian will be conducting a class at UW-Waukesha for four Saturdays, beginning June 4, and details will be on our web site.

Alecia Schmitz gave the Treasurer's Report.

Debbie Callahan announced that we have three new members - Barbara Adrian, Callie Thomas, and Jerry Beres, who each told us something of their art lives.

Debra said more brochures were available for those who needed to replenish their stocks.  The Schauer Show was reported to be excellent, and those who hadn't should make a point to see it.  Pick-up is Monday, May 23, from 4-6 p.m.
As for the Deja Vu II show, maximum outside frame size is 16x20, or proportions leading to 320 square inches or less, because of space constraints.  Any frame style may be used.  The date will be announced later, and will be sometime between August 21 and October 20.

Marcia Hero said discussions are under way concerning a spring exhibit at the Art Bar.

Debra announced the Plein Air picnic will be at Hart Park, where Honey Creek and the Menomonee River converge, in picnic area #1 off 70th St., at the Mueller Building.  The date is Saturday, July 30,  from 10-4.  WPA will furnish meat, buns, and beverages, with the rest of us bringing desserts and salads.  Donna Staats volunteered to head the picnic committee, and three others volunteered to help.

Darron Lillian the gave a brief demonstration of items to take for plein air painting.

Fred Bell will give a pastel demonstration at our next meeting in September.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05.

The Wisconsin Pastel Artists General Meeting on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by President Debra Patterson.  Twenty-two were present.  Three guests attended:  Tina Ward from Sturgeon Bay, Tammy Oreskvic from Saukville, and Gerry Beres from Greenfield

Member announcements were made.   Members of the Martini Girls are among those in a show opening March 5 from 6-9 at the Raven Gallery, and the show will run until May 3.  Marcia Hero confirmed that Loren Willey will be judging the WPA group's show at the Schauer.  Susan Willets said that Creative Expressions has moved their business from the north side to the Marshall Building in the 3rd ward.  The gallery will open in mid-May.  The co-op can accomodate 8-10 members.  Carol Chapman and Susanne Manthey have art in Nora B's Restaurant in Elm Grove.  Carol Chapman has 12 pieces in Vino 100 in Wauwatosa.  Susan Willets has many pieces of art in the Lake Country Gallery.

Marcia Hero said we have a new awards supplier, and working with them will be more efficient.

Treasurer Alecia Schmitz could not attend the meeting because of the weather, and Debra left the Treasurer's report at home, but there is $662. in the treasury.

Debbie Callahan said that dues are due.

Debra Patterson has brochures available for those needing to re-supply.

Debbie said registration for the Schauer is due March 12, and the reception is April 29.

Marcia Hero said the May 11 meeting will be with the Underwood Photo group.  Our first order of business will be to pair up with  photographers as we did last year in choosing which of their photos we each wanted to select, to be interpreted with pastels for a fall show at One-Way Cafe.

Debra is looking for volunteers to plan a picnic on a Saturday in August, at which we will do plein air painting, possibly in the north Kettle Moraine area.  Darron Lillian will hand out an equipment list and give a brief demonstration at the May meeting.

The June IAPS convention is in New Mexico.

Marcia Hero announced the Wauwatosa Chili Cook-Off on North Avenue between 68th-70th Streets would like our group to do a one day fine art show.  We can also do plein air painting.  The Martini Girls will have a canopy at the storefront for their art.

The WPA page of exhibits on Facebook can be shared with friends.  We are encouraged to upload our photos onto it.

Since Lorin Willey is giving the critique at tonight's program, and also judging the Schauer exhibit on April 29, we wondered if he saw a conflict there.  He said no, and we're O.K. with that.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m. by Debra Patterson.

Members in shows were:

Marcia Hero and Debbie Callahan  - Friday, November 5, Miniature Show opening at the ArtBat, 722 E. Burleigh

Marcia Hero distributed forms for the show at the Schauer, April 29-May 23, 2011.  The theme is "Spring Serenade".

Marcia Hero reported the the Board discussed money, and not charging for exhibits in the future.  Debra said we could save by not printing postcards.  We could advertise by each sending the announcements for shows, each ssending the prepared advertising to our personal mailing lists.  We discussed if a CD was necessary, as it's expensive.  There have been difficulties with our website, and these issues will be settled.

Membership Chairman Debbie Callahan said we are looking for new members.

Treasurer Donna Eigen gave her report.  Our old balance was $1369.25.  The new balance is $1025.29

This Saturday, November 6, is the pick-up at One-Way Cafe, from 2:00-3:45.
The Griffin show closes November 28.

As this was an election meeting, Debra had each of the Board members explain their duties.  The Exhibit Committee is also open to new members, and they are not elected.  Nominations were opened for  Treasurer.  Suzanne Manthe nominated Ray Mcinery, and Alecia Schmitz expressed interest in the position.  Secretary Carol Chapman was nominated by Marcia Hero to keep her job, and accepted.  Debra nominated Marcia Hero to repeat as Vice-President, and she accepted.  Debra was nominated to be President again, and said she would accept only for one more two-year term.  Voting took place, and the offices were filled, except for Treasurer, as the nominees would discuss who would be able to fill the post best, as other commitments and distance were considerations.

In order to attract new members, we will leave our WPA brochures, and well as enclosed flyers, at various art-related venues.  Carol Chapman made lists of various sections in the Milwaukee area, and members volunteered to distribute and update information as follows:

West Bend and Cedarburg - Elizabeth Minz                   Richeson's and Appleton - Alecia Schmitz                Milwaukee NE side - Susan Willets           Milwaukee S side and S Milwaukee - Suzanne Manthe

May 5, 2010 - Minutes of General Meeting of WPA

President Debra Patterson called the meeting to order at 6;25 p.m. at Artist and Display.  Eighteen were present.

Announcements:  Jeanne Bass, Ryan Miller, and Roxanne have works in "Creative Expressions" gallery in Mequon.

Treasurer Donna Eigen reported our financial situation.  Two months ago, we had $1379.93; as of May 5, we have $1507.60 in our account.

Debbie Callahan reported all members have paid their dues.  The membership is on our web-site.  Three people have not yet paid for the One-Way Cafe exhibit.
The Griffin Gallery show is from October 1 through November 27, 2010.  Entries will be juried in.  We will find out later how to submit entries.  Sign-up sheet is on the back table.  Each artist may enter one or more pieces, but may not get in the actual show, as space is limited, and the art will be juried by the gallery.  Griffin gets 40% commission, so consider that when pricing your art.  There is a $25. fee for jurying, non-refundable.  If more than one of your pieces gets accepted, there will be a charge for each additional piece.

Debra said Carol will hold the next matting class in the fall.
We are to send in names to be on the WPA mailing for show announcements..
Our new brochures were made available for members to distribute.
We would like to contact artist Jim Hempel to hold a plein air workshop this summer, if enough are interested.  It would probably be on a Sunday.

Copies of the by-laws were distributed to everyone.  We will vote next meeting on changing the voting process to elect Board members.

Carol Chapman gave a brief explanation on choosing metal frames, and how to assemble them, since we will be probably using metal frames at the "Deja Vu" exhibit this fall at One-Way Cafe.

The meeting was adjourned at 7 p.m. for Ryan Miller to give a pastel demonstration.
