The Wisconsin Pastel Artists is a group of people who love the medium of pastel. Pastel techniques can be challenging; the medium is mixed and blended directly on the working surface. Due to the very pure pigment being used by these artists, as well as application techniques, the work is referred to as 'painting' rather than 'drawing.'
Our organization currently sponsors two pastel exhibits a year open to any member. This allows each artist to show their work in a professional venue and to receive feedback from peers as well as an artist who is invited to judge the event.
We offer recognition ribbons as well as cash awards. You can easily check our website to see where the next exhibit will take place!
WORKSHOPS and EVENTS
WPA not only encourages members to attend workshops, but we also bring in well-known artists, such as Rita Kirkman in 2017 and Susan Kuznitsky in 2018 to create workshops for our members and other interested artists.
We also hold an annual Winter Event (When the Dust Settles) and a Summer Picnic/Plein Air day. (Events are for members only.)
We recently initiated signature status in our group. This acknowledges quality of work and service to the group by an individual member. This is granted to a member in good standing after he/she has won place awards in 2 or more WPA exhibitions, and has held a position on the WPA board or on one of the WPA standing committees.
Once this requirement is fulfilled, the president shall notify the member that “WPA” may be affixed after their name. Signature membership shall remain as long as the member is in good standing.

We are a member of IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies). Membership in Wisconsin Pastel Artists (WPA) entitles you to enter exhibitions conducted by IAPS. You must also be a member of WPA to enter your work in our exhibitions.
BECOMING A MEMBER: WHO CAN JOIN IAPS?
IAPS Society Membership is available to qualified pastel societies around the world. When a pastel society becomes an IAPS Member Society then its individual artist members automatically become IAPS artist members and are eligible for IAPS membership benefits.
IAPS MEMBERSHIP PROVIDES:
IAPS provides channels for awareness, communication and education. The Biennial IAPS Conventions bring together master pastelists, instructors, demonstrators, vendors, and exhibitors for a major educational and networking event. IAPS Juried Exhibitions showcase and bring award-winning pastel artwork to public venues.
THE BENEFITS OF IAPS MEMBERSHIP INCLUDE:
Eligibility for IAPS international juried exhibitions at prestigious galleries and on the web;
Internet presence — inclusion on IAPS Membership Directory including Member Showcase;
Ability to advertise your Society-sponsored workshops and exhibitions on the IAPS website;
Support for Member Societies on the IAPS website and at the IAPS Convention;
Participation in the IAPS Convention at discount rates;
Communication and networking with pastel artists from around the world.
The WPA members meet in:
on the second Wednesday evening, at 6:30 p.m. and usually run until 8:30.
The location is at the West Allis City Hall, 7525 West Greenfield Avenue, West Allis, WI., 53214. (414-302-8200)
The format of our meetings varies. We may have a demonstration by an artist. Or we may have a 'show and tell' by members of their recent work. Or we may have a critique by a guest professional artist of work our members bring to the meeting.
Distant members can attend our meetings 'virtually' through the use of Facetime or Skype.
